Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins and minerals are special nutrients that our body needs to keep working properly.  Only very tiny amounts of vitamins and minerals are needed each day, but the body can’t make them for itself, so eating the right foods is really important to give us our daily allowance of vitamins.

C - Vitamin C from fruit and vegetables helps fight infection and keeps your muscles and bones strong.

D - Vitamin D is needed to keep your bones strong. You get it from milk and also sunlight (true!)

B Group - The B group vitamins (B1, B6 & B12) from meat, fish and greens help to make energy. They are needed to make blood and help your nerves work properly.

E - Vitamin E from oils and nuts is important for fighting infection, good skin and fighting ageing.

A - Vitamin A from carrots and fruit is needed to be able to see properly in the dark.

K - Vitamin K from green vegetables like spinach helps your blood to clot, helping you heal wounds.

Calcium - Calcium from milk and cheese is the mineral that keeps your bones strong.

Iron - Iron from red meat is needed to keep your blood count healthy and keep your metabolism ticking over properly.
